For sisters, walis, brothers and reverts

Searching for a Muslim dating app? Here’s the halal alternative

Last updated

IslamicKnot is a wali-first Muslim marriage site for people who want marriage, not dating. There’s no private chat and no swiping: a sister’s family takes every enquiry, sisters and walis join free, and a man pays once, from US$5, to reach her wali. No subscription, and nothing renews.

IslamicKnot is our own service; competitor facts are from their own pages, checked 2 November 2026.

Is dating haram in Islam?

Dating as most people mean it, a private romance before marriage, isn’t allowed in Islam; getting to know someone for marriage, with the family involved, is. The Qur’an tells believers not to go near zina, sex outside marriage (Al-Isra 17:32). The Prophet ﷺ said no man should be alone with a woman unless a mahram, a close male relative she can never marry, is present (Sahih al-Bukhari 5233).

So the halal way has three marks: marriage is the purpose, you’re never alone together, and her wali is involved from the first contact.

If you’ve used dating apps before, nobody here will judge you. Many Muslims try them first, then look for a way that sits better with their faith. More in is dating haram? What’s allowed before marriage; for your own situation, ask a qualified imam you trust.

Muslim dating apps and Islamic dating sites vs IslamicKnot

Whether you searched for a Muslim dating app, an Islamic dating site or a “Muslim Tinder”, the usual model is a private conversation between a man and a woman. IslamicKnot is built around her family.

The left column sums up the usual model. Muzz, for example, says it is “always FREE to see profiles, match, chat & marry” and sells Muzz Gold as a renewing subscription. Its Chaperone Mode can send a wali weekly chat transcripts.

If you want a large pool and don’t mind private chat, that model works. The named apps and sites are set side by side in our comparison of Muslim marriage apps and sites.

For sisters: no man can message you

On IslamicKnot, no man can message, like or match with you: every enquiry goes to your wali. Your profile is free, with no premium tier, and you can create it yourself or ask your wali to create and manage it.

  • Your wali comes first. Your profile can’t be listed until your wali’s number is on file, and we check that the number belongs to him. A person on our team reviews every profile by hand.
  • Your photo stays private. Public photos are softly blurred, hijab and niqab photos are welcome, and no photo is fine. A clear photo is shared only by your family, after contact.
  • Men commit before they call. Every man who reaches your wali has declared five commitments, from keeping the five daily prayers to never asking you or your family for financial help.
  • Not sure what to look for? Pick from ready-made preferences when you sign up.

The decision stays yours: the Prophet ﷺ said a woman’s permission must be sought before she is married (Sahih al-Bukhari 5136), and your wali is there to protect you. See how it works for sisters.

For walis and parents: every enquiry comes to you

A guardian account lets a father or brother list a daughter or sister free of charge and receive every enquiry. You can create and edit her profile, add or remove photos, pause it, or mark it “in talks”.

Every man who calls you has declared five commitments and paid to reach your family. Test those commitments in the first conversation; the wali’s guide to vetting a suitor lists what to ask. Guardians who verify their identity get a Verified badge.

For brothers: speak to her wali, not her DMs

Brothers browse reviewed profiles free, without an account. Before you request a family’s contact, you declare five things, the first four sworn with “I bear Allah as my witness”:

  1. You keep the five daily prayers.
  2. You will never ask her or her family for financial help, or expect them to pay for furnishing the home.
  3. You are able to start a family, with a halal income and no illness that would prevent marriage.
  4. You don’t abuse any substance, and you are open about it if you smoke.
  5. You have read her profile and requirements and believe you are a genuine match.

A “no” to any of the first four closes your account. These are your declarations, not checks IslamicKnot runs; her wali will test them in person.

A family contact costs US$5 (US$12 for three, US$15 for five), paid once, and gives you her wali’s number. More in how IslamicKnot works for brothers.

For revert sisters: supervised introductions

If you’ve embraced Islam and have no Muslim wali, you can still look for a husband safely. Your profile is free and your number is never shared. Every introduction is a conversation inside IslamicKnot with a member of our team present in every message, and contact details filtered out.

IslamicKnot is a chaperone, not your wali. For the nikah, ask your local mosque early: an imam or Islamic-centre director usually acts as wali for a sister with no Muslim relative. See how supervised introductions work.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a halal dating app?

“Halal dating” is a marketing phrase, not an Islamic term. Islam allows getting to know someone for marriage, with a clear purpose, no time alone together and her wali involved. Most apps are built around private chat; IslamicKnot is a marriage site where the family route is the only route.

Is IslamicKnot a dating app?

No. IslamicKnot is a wali-first Muslim marriage website with no private chat, likes, swiping or matching. A man pays once to speak to her wali, usually her father or brother. Revert sisters with no Muslim wali get supervised introductions instead.

Is Muzz a dating app?

In how it works, yes: you like or pass on profiles, and a mutual like opens a private chat. Muzz itself uses both labels: its homepage title is “Where Single Muslims Meet for Love & Marriage”, and another of its pages is titled “Your Favorite Muslim Dating App”. It also offers photo blur for women and a Chaperone Mode; see is Muzz halal?

What’s the best Muslim dating app for women?

For most sisters, it’s the one where no man can message her privately and her family handles the first contact. IslamicKnot is built that way: a man must make five commitments and pay before he reaches her wali. If you’d rather talk first yourself, Muzz offers photo blur and a chaperone option; the safest Muslim marriage apps for women compares them.

Is there a free Muslim dating app?

Yes, at a basic level: Muzz says matching and chat are “always FREE”, and sells an optional Muzz Gold subscription that renews automatically. IslamicKnot is free for sisters and walis; men pay only to contact a family, with no subscription. See free Muslim marriage sites.

Can I chat with Muslim women on IslamicKnot?

No, IslamicKnot has no private chat between men and women. A man who pays receives her wali’s number, or, for a revert sister, a supervised introduction with a team member present in every message.

I’ve used dating apps before. Can I still join?

Yes. Many Muslims try dating apps before looking for something closer to their faith. What counts is how you search from here: with marriage as the goal and her family involved.
