Mohanned Farahat founded IslamicKnot, a wali-first Muslim marriage site operated by MinglyLink LTD, and leads its product and engineering. He is a senior full-stack engineer with more than seven years' experience, mostly for companies in the US and Germany, and he also founded MinglyLink and HexTints. He holds a first-class degree in accounting from the University of Greenwich, took coding bootcamps alongside his studies, and has always worked in tech rather than accounting.

Why he built IslamicKnot

Two things about Muslim marriage apps led him to build it: who you talk to first, and how you are charged.

Who you talk to first

Most Muslim marriage apps begin with a private chat between two strangers and bring the family in later, if at all. In Islam the search for a spouse runs through the family, so IslamicKnot puts that step first: a man's first contact is with a woman's wali, and a revert sister with no Muslim wali is introduced in a conversation supervised by our team. How it works, step by step.

How you are charged

Of the seven platforms in the table below, IslamicKnot is the only one with no subscription. The other six all sell plans that renew automatically.

A subscription can give a man access to more women. But a man looking for a wife isn't looking for more women. He is looking for one, so all that extra access is worth less than it sounds. Mohanned also didn't want a business that earns more the longer someone stays single: a subscription keeps billing until you cancel it, whether or not you contacted anyone that month.

So browsing is free, listing a profile costs nothing, and the person who asks to contact a family pays US$5 per family contact (US$3–4 each in packs), only when a profile fits. Nothing renews, there is nothing to cancel, and you never pay twice for the same profile. Three contacts cost US$12, less than one month on Pure Matrimony or Half Our Deen, or one week of Muslima Gold. IslamicKnot runs no ads and sells no data.

To be fair to the others: if you want to talk to many people, a subscription can cost less, and Muzz and Salams are free to match and chat. IslamicKnot is for someone who would rather pay a small amount to reach one family.

Articles by Mohanned Farahat

The articles he signs cover finding a spouse the halal way, the role of the wali, nikah and mahr, guidance for revert sisters, and how Muslim marriage apps and sites compare. Comparison posts in English, German, French and Dutch carry the date their facts were checked, and each one says that IslamicKnot is our own service.

He is an engineer, not a scholar. IslamicKnot is a matrimonial platform, not a fatwa body: for a ruling on your own situation, ask a scholar you trust.
